Athens, 27 September 2021

In the last few years, Algeria has taken substantial steps for strategically shifting to green economy, protecting the environment, and improving the business environment, as a way to approach its economic growth targets and sustainable development. Its relevant strategy was praised by Mr. Stefano Corrado of the EUD in Algeria, during the online launching of the WES activity on Circular Economy and Entrepreneurship on the 16th of September 2021.

Recognising the importance of creating a critical mass of well-trained young entrepreneurs  for strengthening circular economy and green entrepreneurship in Algeria and in reaction to the request by the Ministry of Environment and relevant national actors, the WES project is offering its services for strengthening the country’s training capacity in the higher academic sector. It will be providing an academic course for the “training of trainers”, starting with the university teachers and young students on green entrepreneurship and circular economy of the Faculty of Technology of the University of Boumerdes (Department of Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering department), acting as a pilot.

Through the collaboration of the WES project with the ‘National Conservatory of Environmental Training’ (CNFE) and the University of Boumerdes, a national university training network is expected to be developed on green and circular economy, which is closely interlinked also to sustainable consumption and production.

In the meeting, Ms. Malika Bouali, General Director of the CNFE and the WES Focal Point in Algeria, presenting the national context of the launched activity, stressed that the Algerian government has set specific ‘green’ goals to be achieved. One of them was the first green Entrepreneurship Incubator that was launched in Algiers, last June. “We feel confident” she said, “that soon, the adoption of legislation and institutional initiatives would further contribute to the development of entrepreneurship”.

“The WES activity will be developed in the forthcoming months till August 2022, but this is only the start of a very ambitious and visionary programme that can be replicated in other countries too”, as the WES Team Leader, Prof. Michael Scoullos noted.
