The EU funded “Water and Environment Support (WES) in the ENI Neighbourhood South Region” project together with the Algerian Ministry of the Environment and Renewable Energy and the National Conservatory of Environmental Training (CNFE) organised on 22 November 2022 in Algiers, the closing event of its national activity on circular economy, sustainable development and green entrepreneurship within Higher Education in Algeria.

The opening session of the events was chaired by the Secretary General of the Ministry, Ms. Nadia Chenouf, who acknowledged in her welcome statement the efforts made by the CNFE and its renewed cooperation with WES for the implementation of these activities which aimed at reducing pollution in the Mediterranean and promoting green entrepreneurship in Algeria.

During this event, 27 students and CNFE staff as well as professors of the University of Boumerdes were awarded certificates for having successfully completed their respective courses on green entrepreneurship and circular economy that rolled out from November 2021 till June 2022. The course has been carried out by WES partner MedWaves, the Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (formerly SCP/RAC) of the Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP/MAP), in cooperation with the SwitchMed project, the CNFE and the University of Boumerdes.

Moreover, Mr. Samir Lachehab, responsible of the University of Boumerdes incubator, delivered certificates of incubation of green entrepreneurship projects for the projects proposed by the students.

Discussions focused on the lessons learned from the overall university training experience as well as the creation of a network on circular economy and the replication of the course by other universities.  Mr. Aksas Hammouche, head of the department of process engineering at the University of Boumerdes confirmed that following the success of this course provided to university professors and then to students, the Scientific Committee of the university has taken the decision to integrate this course on green entrepreneurship and circular economy within the curriculum of the university for the academic year 2022/2023.
