RE-1-REG: Phasing out single-use plastics in the Mediterranean

N-E-PS-1: Technical assistance on sustainable Medical Waste Management

The collection, transport, treatment and disposal of medical waste are essential in reducing environmental and health risks. This activity is aiming at the promotion of sustainable medical waste management solutions. It will support Palestine in updating the Master Plan with a Roadmap for healthcare waste and define a set of measures for the development of a contingency plan for crisis situations.

Second WES Steering Committee Meeting

The second WES Steering Committee meeting was organised on-line on the 23rd of November 2020. The Steering Committee brought together the WES Water and Environment Focal Points from the Partner Countries, the European Commission, institutional partners, representatives of the WES Demonstration projects and regional organisations. The meeting was co-chaired by the Contracting Authority - the European Commission, Directorate General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR). During the meeting the progress of the project since the previous SCM (September 2020) and the way ahead was discussed, leading to the endorsement of the project’s Workplan for the next twelve months.

N-W-MO-1: Support Water Demand Management in relation to water scarcity

The efficient use of water has become of paramount importance and one of the country's national priorities. This activity will support the management of water demand linked to water scarcity, including the development of political instruments aimed at reduce losses in irrigation water (for example on the plot), domestic, tourist and industrial uses and unbilled water.

Final Report of the Horizon 2020 Initiative

WES has been instrumental in the compilation of a report entitled: Reaching the 2020 Horizon: 14 years of Mediterranean cooperation on Environment - the H2020 Initiative for a cleaner Mediterranean. It focuses on:  overall achievements of the H2020 Initiative;  achievements, opportunities and challenges per H2020 component (investments for pollution reduction and prevention, capacity building, review and monitoring);  conclusions and recommendations particularly in view of the UfM’s Environment Agenda (“2030GreenerMed”) that was endorsed by the 2nd UfM Ministerial Meeting on Environment and Climate Action. It is a UfM publication and is available in English, French and Arabic.

RW-1-REG: Regional Roundtable on WEFE Nexus in the Mediterranean ‘Promoting innovations, investments and upscaling of solutions’

This Regional Roundtable aims to facilitate a multi-stakeholder dialogue among Mediterranean countries and stakeholders to further advance Nexus understanding, facilitate cross-fertilization among institutions, organizations and practitioners, and lay the path towards coordinated actions to tackle Nexus challenges in the region, that also affect the coastal and marine environment in a Source-to-Sea approach.
